My Education & Experience

Katharine Steffes is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), Board Certified Supervisor for LGPCs, as well as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) at Luminous Psychotherapy. Mrs. Steffes earned a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Psychology from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. She completed her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in child and adolescent therapy from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington, DC.

Mrs. Steffes has several years of clinical experience with children, adolescents, and families in various clinical, therapeutic, and academic settings. Previously, Mrs. Steffes worked as the interim school counselor at Indian Creek School and the school counselor for St. Bernadette School in Silver Spring, Maryland. As part of her therapeutic approach, she worked collaboratively with the teachers, support staff, and other clinicians to help identify a child's unique needs while creating a plan to support them and their families. Additionally, she spent several years honing her counseling skills at Halcyon Wellness Center, a private practice in Millersville, Maryland.

Mrs. Steffes' clinical training focused on developing techniques to enhance and promote emotional and social growth. She has experience doing in-home counseling to address family, social, and emotional difficulties. Her clinical set is grounded in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with an integration of art therapy, which applies to individual, group, and family therapy. Throughout the therapeutic process, Mrs. Steffes strives to apply each individual's strengths to her interventions to promote positive change in each session. Her services help address concerns of anxiety, depression, social-emotional learning, and executive functioning.

Mrs. Steffes is passionate about helping children and uses a wraparound approach to providing services for them and their families. She has co-authored and designed Creative Explorers, a Social Skills program she previously offered at Halcyon Wellness Center. The group utilized play and art therapy to promote prosocial behaviors, emotional regulation, and social skills development. Most recently, she conducted a parenting seminar on grief and loss in children.

Meet Tucker, Our Therapy Dog

Tucker is a young English Cream Golden Retriever who may accompany Mrs. Steffes during sessions to help provide comfort and support during difficult sessions. He is a sweet, cuddly, and loving boy who adores nothing more than a treat or a good belly rub.
